Introduction

An adaptive 2-D Kohonen-based Self-organizing Map was developed for use with Alta Vista searching. This SOM allowed user customization of the level of categorization the tool providee.

Instruction

Adaptive SOM allowed a user to perform a search using appropriate Alta Vista syntax. A Java-based SOM would then be displayed.

The user could Select Modify to see drop down menu options, and could choose to see more or fewer categories, to see more general or specific categories, or to exclude specific terms from categorization.

Clicking submit redrew the map.
